Cricket Feed

Hi All,

Continuing my business plan for a cricket farm it seems to me the biggest single cost at commercial levels will be feed. Even basic feed barley comes in at £130 a tonne and given the feed conversion ratio and amount of crickets needed to make cricket powder, feed costs could easily come in at over £700 per tonne with something higher protein added. Has anyone else looked at this and possibly used alternatives?



  • The following so-called "human refuse" cricket diet ("HRD") is compared to 3 other diets. The "HRD" composition is 34% peels & leftover fruit /vegetables, 27% rice/pasta, 11% pork/beef meat, 11% bread, 11% cheese skins, 0.6% yolk.

    Author's reared house Acheta domesticus crickets in 24 hr.light, 30.5°C. Although mortality in initial 3 molts was more common there was less on the human refuse diet ("HRD") than comparison diets - see Fig. 27.2

    Fig. 27.1 charts relative weight gain on 4 trial diets. .Fig. 27.3 is only about the "HRD" & charts, among other data, the feed consumption ( grams, on right side).

    Table 27.2 not only breaks down amino acid particulars in cricket fed on 3 of the different diets, but also the content of all amino acids in those 3 different diets - plus what amino acids got excreted in cricket frass.

    Table 27.4 details the similar parameters as above, but for specific fatty acids.
