Alfalfa for locusts?

I have read on numerous sites and articles about people feeding locusts Alfalfa. I have tried this several times, and no matter what I do, my locusts (neither migratoria nor gregaria) don't eat it. Neither do they eat clover. I've tried both fresh and dry, different age of the plant, harvested in different seasons, it's always the same - they avoid it.

Is there some special species of alfalfa for locusts? Or what might be the problem?

Thanks

  • Hi slupik, - Neem tree’s azadirachtiin compound has been heavily marketed as a “natural” product for insect control. It works as an anti-feedant to locusts; my guess is both your clover & alfalfa growers sprayed it (or another anti-feedant).
